1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 Right now, due to our limited resources, most of our collection is not easily usable outside of our organization. On a case-by-case basis, we do occasionally provide footage to partners, allies, and the media.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 Going forward, we are looking forward to building on our relationship with the Human Rights Documentation Initiative (HRDI) at the University of Texas Libraries, where currently a small part of our collection is online and accessible for scholarly use. We chose HRDI as a partner because of their sensitivity to the kinds of privacy and security issues that exist within human rights collections, and their focus on video. In the long run, we hope to make much more of our collection accessible through the University of Texas Libraries.

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 We are also interested in exploring new ways that archives can be used to prevent human rights abuses and to promote justice and accountability. For example, we recently agreed to provide a small subset of our collection to a university in the UK for a project that will train computers to recognize certain violations recorded on video. Of course, the use of human rights collections as “big data” raises a lot of new ethical concerns, so we have been approaching this slowly and carefully.
